At what age does your toddler starts responding to commands?

My son is 15 months and I’ve noticed when I ask him to get his shoes or if I ask him to stop doing something he does not do it.

He likes to gives hugs and kisses but when it comes to following directions he does not listen to me. Is he too young to understand commands or is he just being stubborn?
He understands come here and when I say give me a kiss he gives me a kiss on the cheek. If I ask him to give something to say his dad, he just runs with the item and throws it in his toy box.

Well, my son is 11 months old and understands a few simple commands, like “Don’t touch”, “No”, and “Come here”.

Has your son ever obeyed you when asked to get his shoes? If he has listened before, then I would say he does understand and he is not wanting to listen any more. This is when an introduction to discipline comes in, to teach him to obey even if he does not want to.

eta: Ok. So you tell him to hand his dad something, and he will pick it up, yet he does something else with it. He may understand, he may not. Here’s what you should do (you can even make up scenarios to help teach your son, as well as for practice).

Have you and your husband in the same room with your son, with an object he recognizes by name. “Jonny, will you please give your dad the ball?” He picks it up, yet wanders off with it. Go to him, tell him no, and then grab his hand, keeping the object in his other hand. Repeat your command: “Give the ball to Daddy.” Repeat it as you walk him over to daddy. Once you reach daddy, repeat the command again while you help him hand it over.

When daddy is holding the object, smile and clap and make your son see that what he did according to your command was a good thing. A few minutes later, place the object back on the other side of the room, and repeat.

Anytime you may think he does not understand a command, show him. Teach him, and be sure to practice the command throughout the day until he is able to preform the action on his own.
